Hype Williams

Hype Williams

While doing some independent research I looked at popular video directors. And Hype Williams is a music video director I find inspiring because of the visual illustration he creates in much of his work.
Personally, I admire his work when using the fish eye lens, for example in Busta Rhymes video ‘Gimme Some More’. The representation given out through the fish eye lens aren't stereotypical and this something we may use to incorporate into our work.

This video with Nas is creative in making a mainstream song look both mainstream & underground. It shows pop culture with the use of cars and clothing and the use if the city lights are really effective. However it has an underground feel as they go show clips of the main artist in urban inner city culture. Lastly, the idea to the make a rapper perform on top of a moving vehicle added to the feeling of the song as it looked risky but fun

I like the use of fire in the background, as it adds suspicion and mystery to the artist standing in front. But also suits the theme of the song and aggressive delivery of the lyrics. Furthermore, the video is very detailed in promoting a lavish lifestyle of the artist and reflects their brand image well.

The use of the fish eye lens along with theme of them being in space makes the video more fun to view. I also like the colours of the costumes used like the yellow and red spacesuits. The setting allows the artist to have the freedom to be playful

In the video the main artist is the focal point of the camera throughout. You get many shots of the artist just looking into the camera and rapping. This builds a relationship between the audience and
artist. I really like the location. As the artist is isolated so you’re forced to focus on their actions.

The animation in this video is very creative and adds a new edge to showing the story of the lyrics.
