Research for Music Videos: Part 8 - Summary of music industry in 2012.

The music industry has changed hugely in the last 10 years. The production process 10 years ago involved artists having to contact big record labels in order to become famous. The equipment was huge and extremely expensive which meant that artists could not be independent. However, now we have digital software which is available to all allowing underground artists to produce music in the comfort of their own home, moreover their is also software that can change ones voice to make it more appealing to the target audience.

Distribution 10 years ago meant that people had to contact media such as pirate radio for their songs to be heard, however now, artists can distribute their music via social networking sites, email, youtube and mixtapes. The exchange of music was also significantly different too. Record stores music channels and shops where the only form of exchange. Now we can go on itunes and legally buy songs or simply illegally download or watch/listen to music on youtube or other sites!

Music business is changing, illegal downloads mean artists loose money and now make money through concerts and merchandise.

Artists such as Billy Braggs have resorted to selling t-shirts in order to gain profit from the losses made of free downloads. He recorded six new songs and allowed people to download them for free, however sold his t-shirts for £22 and broke even for the t-shirts and downloads and made profit on top. Braggs used the t-shirts as a lost leader as he lost money however it led people into buying other products.
