The music video I have chosen to analyse is Noah and the whale - 5 years time.
The main position of the band are to narrate but to also be participants. The narrative in this video is just plenty of illustration of the lyrics on time which is used as a base track. So for example in the chorus the lyrics are 'sun, sun, sun' and the lyrics are on the screen while being illustrated allowing the audience to identify with the chorus and the use of repetition of the motif allows the audience to join in almost immediately. It is quite disjointed as for example the central artist sings about being in a zoo however on screen they are in a farm. This causes the video to become very weird, emphasising the purpose of the music video. The filming has quite a retro feel to it from the mise en scene to the way in which its filmed to be perceived as a home type video. We see the artist quite often throughout the video as we see him when performing on the stage and also when illustrating the lyrics as the main focus of the video is the band. The ratio between narrative and performance is 1/3 to 2/3's and there is a gradual build up of this as we begin to see more and more performance.
I believe that this is a great video as although it does not have a strong narrative it is simple yet effective as the audience are left with the repetition of the lyrics in their head as well as something to think about (what the video means). Moreover, by repeatedly portraying the band as 'fun, fun, fun' and repeating words with positive connotations (love, sun etc) it makes the audience feel more warm hearted towards them potentially making them wanting to buy their products.
