Research for Music Videos: Part 5 - Carolin Vernalis's Theory

Carole Vernalis 5 main points in regards to camerawork and editing in music videos:

1. The usual rules of continuity that are usually filmed in movies are broken in order to draw attention to what is on the screen.
2. Edits are really obvious and exaggerated in order to draw attention to themselves.
3. A base track is used to have a repetitive shot in order to give the video a sense of structure.
4. The camera may move in time with the artist/band’s music and the camera is never static within a sequence.
5. Lastly jump cuts are often used.

An example of some of these main points is The Game - Dream. Editing is used effectively in order to show flashbacks and other aspects to the meaning of the song. The base track in this video is The Game in the studio.

The Bike Song - Mark Ronson; The base track would be Mark on the bike. The Song shows how bikes brings everyone together. Although in comparison  to th video above the editing is not so exaggerated, jump cuts are used frequently. All music videos use Vernalis's points however some may use more of one point.
